About Subrata Mitra
Subrata Mitra (1930–2001) was a famous Indian cinematographer, best known for working with director Satyajit Ray on the legendary Apu Trilogy. He started filming when he was just 21, even though he had no formal training.
Subrata changed the way Indian films looked by creating a special lighting method called “bounce lighting” that made scenes look more natural. His camera work added emotion and beauty to films like Pather Panchali, Charulata, and Nayak.
He studied at Ballygunge Government High School and later worked with international directors, winning many awards including the Padma Shri. Subrata also taught young filmmakers and loved painting and music. He is remembered as one of India’s greatest artists behind the camera.
Rules & Regulations
Theme: “My City, My Lens”
Open your eyes to the world around you — capture the soul of the place you call home.
Theme Description:
Your surroundings tell a story — the morning rush on narrow lanes, the aroma of street food, the sound of temple bells, a child flying a kite, or an old man reading the newspaper at a tea stall. This theme invites you to become a visual storyteller — to see beauty in the ordinary and meaning in the everyday.
Whether you live in a big city, a small town, or a quiet village — your lens is your voice. Through your photograph, we want to experience what your locality feels like — its people, streets, rituals, struggles, celebrations, and charm.
You don’t need famous monuments or big cameras. What matters is your unique point of view.
