About Subrata Mitra
Subrata Mitra (1930–2001) was a famous Indian cinematographer, best known for working with director Satyajit Ray on the legendary Apu Trilogy. He started filming when he was just 21, even though he had no formal training.
Subrata changed the way Indian films looked by creating a special lighting method called “bounce lighting” that made scenes look more natural. His camera work added emotion and beauty to films like Pather Panchali, Charulata, and Nayak.
He studied at Ballygunge Government High School and later worked with international directors, winning many awards including the Padma Shri. Subrata also taught young filmmakers and loved painting and music. He is remembered as one of India’s greatest artists behind the camera.
Organised by Ballygunge Government High School Alumni Association as part of the Centenary Celebrations.
